Open the drawbridge

Fly back to Eldin Volcano and drop in to the Temple Entrance bird statue. Head inside. There’s another bird statue on your right.

In the first room, hop across the rocks to the first landing and turn right. Dig to reveal an air vent, and ride it up to the chest with a red rupee.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Hop across the room to the west to meet Cobal again. Dig up the room for some rupees and hearts.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Continue north. When you land in front of the drawbridge, use your sword to cut the ropes to your right and left. The final rope is on the right side of the bridge. Use your Beetle to cut it. Cross the bridge.
Bomb Bag

Deal with the Lizafos in the next room. Dig all the spots around you for Slingshot ammo, rupees, and hearts.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Use your Slingshot to hit one of the Bomb Flowers on the statue head in the middle of the lava. When they all explode, an eyeball will land in front of you. Climb on.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Ride the stone ball left to the southwest corner of the room. Place one of the Bomb Flowers onto the platform. When the lava pushes it up, it’ll destroy the bombable wall there.
Open the chest that reveals to pick up a Golden Skull.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Hop back on the stone ball and ride it north to the northwest corner of the room. Open the chest there for a Blue Bird Feather. Dig the spots there for some rupees.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Take your stone ball east. There’s a switch in the lava for you to crash into. Activate it to lift a platform we’ll get to in a bit.

Ride the ball all the way back around to the southeast corner of the room. Hop off and speak to Ledd.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Just past him, turn left and crawl into the cage. Handle the Bokoblin inside — swing carefully, since you’ll trigger the Bomb Flowers if you hit them. When it’s safe, roll a Bomb Flower back out through the cage to destroy the boulder behind Ledd.

Inside the cage, climb the ladder up. Turn right for an Amber Relic. Drop off the ledge there, and carefully cross along the top of the wall to the north. Climb up on the other side, and continue around. Dig in the spots there for some rupees and a fairy.
Head back out to where Ledd was, and go through the door you unblocked.

As soon as you enter the room, turn left for another Amber Relic.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
There are two Lizalfos here. Your Reinforced Shield (or even just the Iron Shield) will protect you from their fire breath. You can Shield Bash their tails when they jump at you to stun them for a second. Other than that, just avoid their blocking arm to attack.
They’ll jump around a lot, so try to separate them so you’re only fighting one at a time. You’ll pick up a couple Lizard Tails for your trouble.
When they’re both defeated, a chest will appear with the Bomb Bag inside. Head back out and speak with Ledd. He’ll give you the Bomb Bag and 5 Bombs. Fill the bag the rest of the way — it can hold up to 10 Bombs — from inside the cage.
Ride the stone ball to the center of the room. Hop off and save at the bird statue.
Earth Temple Dungeon Map

From the bird statue, head west and use a bomb to destroy the boulder blocking the path. Deal with the Lizalfos, and head through the door.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
As soon as you enter the next room, there’s another Amber Relic to the right, and dig spots to the right and left.
Hop across the floating rocks to get to the far side of the room. Use bombs to deal with any Magma Spumes that you can reach, and take out the Bokoblins as you go.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Ride the westernmost rock up to the platform and fight the Bokoblins there. The chest contains the Dungeon Map. There’s also a dig spot behind it with some hearts.
Raise the walkway

Back in the main room, hop on the stone ball and head east. There’s a very hard to see crack in the wall — check your map for a red X to see the location. Bomb that spot twice to open a new path.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Inside, stop at the first platform on your right. The cave there has Bomb Flowers and a dig spot. Load up your Bomb Bag.
Continue down the tunnel a little.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Directly across from the next lava spout, there’s another crack in the wall on the left. Bomb it twice to open a loop around the barricade.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Around the next corner, there’s a large red gate. Hop off onto the platform on your left. Use your Beetle to fly into the rope at the top. There’s another rope on the back side.
Fly your Beetle down the hallway to the left of the door. Loop around at the end and cut the other rope.
Ride the stone ball through the open gate. Hop off onto the platform on your left. Backtrack through the tunnel to visit the bird statue.

Continue around the corner and along the narrow lava bridge.
Stop at the next platform on your left. Deal with the Spumes and Lizalfos, and then open the chest there for a red rupee.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Ride the stone ball into the switch on this side of the walkway.
Hop off onto the central platform (and save at the bird statue if you want). Take the newly raised walkway north and go through the door.
Ramps and boulders
Graphic: Jeffrey Parkin | Sources: Nintendo via Polygon
Sprint up the ramp and look for a gap in the first set of boulders that roll at you.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Climb into the alcove on the left side of the ramp to catch your breath and to avoid the second set of boulder.
Sprint the rest of the way up.
Graphic: Jeffrey Parkin | Sources: Nintendo via Polygon
Instead of running up the next ramp, look to your right for a tunnel. Crawl through. On the other side, refill your Bomb Bag, and then hit both dig spots. One will be an air vent to ride up.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Take the stairs up. You’ll end up overlooking the ramp. Just to your right and a little up the ramp, there’s a discolored patch on the ground. Throw a bomb at (or just above) that spot. The bomb will roll down and open another alcove on the left of the ramp.
Graphic: Jeffrey Parkin | Sources: Nintendo via Polygon
Go all the way back down, and sprint up the ramp to that alcove.
Wait out the line of boulders, and then sprint the rest of the way up. Cross the room and save at the next bird statue.
Dragon Sculpture
Graphic: Jeffrey Parkin | Sources: Nintendo via Polygon
Take the path south from that bird statue. Follow it to the end to find a chest with the Dragon Sculpture inside.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
As you leave the platform, a boulder will Indiana Jones you back down. Sprint away and watch for the stairs on your left.
The boulder will bounce across the room and dam the flow of lava. Cross over and place the Dragon Sculpture in the lock. The head will be in the bottom right corner looking down.
Pyroclastic Fiend Scaldera boss fight
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Continue into the next room until you trigger a cutscene. At the end, you’ll face off against the Pyroclastic Fiend Scaldera.
Phase 1
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
For the first part of the fight, retreat up the ramp as Scaldera chases you. Toss a bomb at it to knock it back. It’ll roll back down the ramp a ways.
When it stands back up, it’ll inhale for a few seconds before spitting fireballs at you. Get close enough and toss a bomb while it’s inhaling. When the bomb goes off, some of Scaldera’s rocky armor will blow off. While it’s stunned, get in close and attack the exposed eye.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Repeat this process until you remove all of the stone armor.
When you run out of bombs, retreat to the top of the ramp.
There’s an open area there with Bomb Flowers and hearts — and Scaldera can’t reach it. You’ll still have to avoid fireballs, though.
Phase 2
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
Once all the armor is removed, you’ll battle a much leggier version of Scaldera. It will rush over you and up the ramp, and then roll back down. Let it pass, and then get out of the way.
The rest of the fight goes the same as before.
Just keep at it until you defeat Scaldera and earn your Heart Container.
Earth Spring
Through the door, you’ll enter the Earth Spring. After watching the cutscene, loop around to the back of the altar.
Image: Nintendo via Polygon
There’s no Goddess Cube this time, but there are several fairies. If you have any empty bottles, use your Bug Net to catch fairies to place inside.
Return to the front and deliver a Skyward Strike to the altar. You’ll get the Amber Tablet and information about where we’re going next.
Back outside, head all the way back to Skyloft and place the tablet Inside the Statue of the Goddess.
We’ll pick up with some shopping and preparation in the next section.
